Gameduino July roundup
Things have been quite active in the GD3 world lately, here are some of the noteworthy events of July. Now that Excamera Labs has multiple products, it's possible to put together some proper rewards for people who have done cool things with GD3. This month two contributors will be getting goodie bags: Lawrie Griffiths for the MyStorm oscilloscope and @pls for his ongoing space game. Lawrie Griffiths brought MyStorm and Gameduino 3 together to make an oscilloscope. MyStorm is an ARM CPU plus an FPGA, ideal for signal capture. And of course Gameduino 3 is the best Arduino shield for graphics! The main writeup is in the MyStorm forum, with some additional discussion on the Gameduino forum. Hackaday also covered it.
Forum member @pls has been working on a space shooter. Using the free space bitmap graphics by Kenney.nl, @pls has put together a short space game for the GD3, and has been posting his progress on the forum.
The Sunflower Shield was funded on Kickstarter. The Sunflower Shield's display is driven by an FT810, and the GD2 library now supports it, so you can use GD2 to write applications. The campaign reached 312% of its target, so congratulations to Paul Bartek.
The test run of 7" GD3s sold out, and I placed an order for another 100 7" panels. These should arrive "soon" according to the manufacturer. I'm really pleased with the quality of this manufacturer's panels, but they do have a lead time. To the people who are waiting for their orders: thanks for your patience.
GD3 now has a Conways Life port, which uses this bit-parallel implementation for computing the next generation. It runs at an amazing 60 Hz on a regular Arduino. Code is linked from this thread.
There is now a native Windows port of the GD asset converter. No Python installation required for Windows users! Download links are here.
TermDriver (Gameduino's text-only cousin) launched. It uses an FT810, just like Gameduino 3, to generate the VGA output. A tiny microcontroller runs the ANSI terminal emulation and drives the FT810. The TermDriver page is here.
